VERY EASY CHILD'S TAN SWEATER & HAT

 BY  MARGARET HUBERT  © 2004

This super easy garment is made in one piece, starting at one sleeve cuff and working your way over.  The only finishing required is sewing the underarm seams. It is another version of my first very easy child’s sweater.

Materials:   2 skeins of Lion Brand Sport weight Wool Ease held together

1 pair knitting needles size 101/2     Gauge  15 sts = 4 inches

Sizes are for 2 (4, 6)

Starting at sleeve edge, cast on 33 (37, 39) sts.  Work in sand st ( 1 row knit (wrong side), 1 row K 1, P 1) for 9 (91/2, 10) inches (this allows for a 2” turnback cuff. End with a wrong side row, At the beginning of the next row cast on 26 (30, 34) sts. Beg with P 1, K 1, work to end, cast on 26 (30, 34) knit all across. Con’t pattern  for 4 1⁄2 (4 1⁄2, 5) inches, end on a right side row.    Next row (divide for neck opening), knit 39 sts (45, 50), join new ball of yarn, bind off next 7 sts, work rem 39 (45, 50).  Working both sides at once, each on a separate ball of yarn, keeping pattern as established, work for 5,  (6,  6 1/2) inches MORE, ending on a wrong side row.  Next row, knit all sts to neck opening, cast on 7 sts, join as one piece again and continue knitting on other side for 4 1⁄2, (41/2, 5) inches,  Then being sure to keep pattern as established , at the beg of the next 2 rows bind off 26 ( 30, 34).  Con’t working pattern for 9 (9 1⁄2, 10) inches.  Bind off .   Finishing:  Sew both underarm seams by weaving.  Turn back cuff.   This pattern st is completely reversible and either side may be used as the right side.  In the photo I have used the nubby side as my right side.

To block this sweater, sprinkle with cool water till damp, gently pat to shape on a terry towel.

MATCHING HAT: Cast on 64 (72, 72) work sand st pattern  for 2 1⁄2 (3, 3) inches.  Work ST ST, until 5 1⁄2 (6, 6) inches from beg. End on a purl row.  Dec as follows:
