CHILD’S OPEN WORK VEST

Sizes: 2 (4-6)   I used Patons “Look at Me” Sport weight yarn and #8 or H hook 2 (3, 3)skeins.

  NOTES:

  When beginning, mark right side of work.  When at armhole, always join new yarn for fronts and back from right side.  Start borders from right side.

  To  Decrease Filet Crochet:  On a dec row, chain 3 instead of 5 to turn, when you make your first dc, you will have eliminated one space. -

  Foundation Row:  Chain 110 (116 – 122)  Work 1 dc in 5th chain from hook *ch 2, skip 2, 1 dc in next st, repeat from * across, end 1 dc in last ch.  Piece  should measure  21 (22, 23) inches.  There will be 36 (38, 40) spaces.  Turn.

  Row 1:   Chain 5 (counts as 1 dc, ch 2)  * make l dc in next dc, ch 2, repeat from * across row, end with a dc in the 3rd st of turning ch 5.  Repeat this row till 6 1⁄2  (7, 7 1⁄2) inches from beg.

 

SHAPE RIGHT FRONT:  Continuing in pat as established Work over 8 (9, 9) spaces, make 1 dc in next dc, turn.  Working on these 8 (9, 9) patt, continue as established,  decreasing 1 st at FRONT edge only, till 5 patt rem.  Work even if necessary till 6 1⁄2 (7, 7 1⁄2 ) inches from armhole, end off this front.

 

SHAPE LEFT FRONT:  Join yarn 8 (9, 9) Patt in from Left Front, right side facing, work to correspond to right front.

 

BACK: Skip 2 spaces, join yarn from right side, in next      dc, work across in patt on 16 (16 , 18) patts.  (there should be 2 patts left for underarm)  Work even in Patt as established till armhole is same as fronts.  End off, sew shoulder seams.

 

BORDERS;  Joining yarn from right side, at bottom of work ,  at underarm, -

  Work as follows:   Row 1:   Work in sc, making 2 sc in each open space, 3 in each corner, 3 in  stitch where V neck shaping begins, continue all around till you reach spot where your began.  -

  Row 2:  Same as row 1, making 3 sts in the center st of each group of 3 from row 1

  Row 3, Same, EXCEPT, you will be making 5 buttonholes, evenly spaced on right front.  To make buttonholes, chain 3, skip 2 sts. Continue around as before.  -

  Row 4:  Same, EXCEPT,  you will make 2 sc in each buttonhole SPACE.Row

  Row 5:  Same   Except make 2 sc in center st at v, corners remain same.

  Row 6:  One row backward sc all around. 

 

ARMHOLE BORDERS:   Join yarn at underarm, work 3 rows sc all around armhole.  One row backward sc.

  Embellish vest with flowers and leaves as you wish

  Small Flower:  Chain 5, join with a slip st to form a ring.  Make 10 sc in ring.  Join.  *Chain 3, make 3 dc in next st, chain 2, sc in next st.  Repeat from * around, you should have 5 petals, end off.

  Leaf:  Chain 12, work sc in each st till 1 st before end of chain, make 3 sc in last st, now working on other side of chain, make 1 sc in each of next 8 sts, ch 1 and turn, working in back loop only, work 1 sc in each st, making 3 sc at bottom of leaf and ending at about 4 st from top of leaf.  End off.  -
